The short answer
Xero's DIY sandal is still one of the simplest ways to build a very minimal sandal around your own foot shape. The important update is that the product has changed names and the old review no longer describes the current range cleanly.
In April 2026 Xero relaunched the kit as the Genesis DIY Sandal Kit after pausing it during its 2025 Shopify migration. The current kit uses a pre-shaped FeelTrue outsole in either 4 mm or 6 mm, polyester cord and an included hole punch. You position the toe hole, lace the sandal and optionally trim the outsole.
My main lesson from making these has not changed: the customisation is the attraction, but it also means you are responsible for the final fit. I once trimmed a sole too short, and getting the cord tension right took more adjustment than the product's simplicity suggests.
What you are buying in 2026
The current Xero DIY collection sells the Genesis DIY Sandal Kit as the main build-your-own sandal. Xero's current April 2026 instructions list:
- FeelTrue outsole: 4 mm or 6 mm
- Colours: black or Mocha Earth for the outsole
- Cord: 100% polyester, with multiple colour choices
- Hole punch: included for positioning the toe hole
- Sizing: foot-length groups A to K
You also need a hammer, lighter or match, and a magazine or similarly thick surface under the sole while punching the hole. Scissors are optional if you decide to trim the outsole.
The old Minimal-list article compared a FeelTrue kit with a raw Vibram “Classic Kit”. Xero still hosts older Classic/Vibram making instructions, but that is no longer the useful way to explain the current buy-now product. If you are shopping today, start with the Genesis DIY kit that Xero actually lists.
4 mm vs 6 mm: which sole should you choose?
4 mm
Choose the 4 mm option if the main reason you want the kit is a very thin, flexible sandal with more ground feel. Xero calls this its thinner FeelTrue option.
6 mm
Choose the 6 mm option if you want a little more material between your foot and the ground. Xero describes it as slightly stiffer while still flexible.
Neither thickness is universally better. The choice is the same trade-off found across minimalist sandals: more ground feedback versus more separation from rough or hot surfaces.
How custom is the fit?
More custom than a ready-made sandal, but not infinitely custom. You choose the nearest outsole size from your foot length, decide where the toe hole goes and can trim excess rubber around the foot.
Xero's current instructions make an important point the old article missed: you do not have to trim immediately. If the outsole already follows your foot reasonably well, try it first. You can remove material later; you cannot put it back after an enthusiastic cut.
That would have saved me one of my main DIY mistakes. I cut one sandal a little short. If I were doing another pair, I would start conservatively, lace it, walk in it and only then refine the outline.
The toe hole matters more than it looks
The current instructions place the toe hole roughly a quarter-inch in front of the webbing between the big toe and second toe, with some freedom to shift it slightly.
This is the part I would take slowly. A few millimetres of position can change how the cord sits and whether the sole tracks naturally under your foot. Mark before punching, stand on the sole again, and make sure both feet are checked independently rather than assuming they are identical.
Lacing: simple design, fiddly setup
The standard Genesis DIY setup uses one cord through the toe hole, around the outside ankle hole, across the heel and through the inside ankle hole. In other words, the basic lacing already creates heel retention.
The previous article blurred this with Xero's optional hardware and suggested children could simply skip toe posts and heel straps. That is not a good description of the current kit. The standard sandal itself depends on the toe hole and a heel-running cord. Xero separately sells optional hardware such as toe loops and heel straps for people who want to modify the setup.
My experience was that lacing takes experimentation. Too loose and the sole can move around; too tight and the cord can dig in. Expect to re-tie it rather than assuming the first knot is the final fit.
Do you need to be good at DIY?
No, but you do need to be comfortable making irreversible decisions. Punching a hole and threading cord are straightforward. Trimming is where patience matters.
I would describe it as an easy project with a small margin for error, rather than “perfect custom sandals in minutes”. If you dislike measuring, cutting or adjusting knots, the ready-made Genesis sandal solves a similar minimalist job without the build stage.
Are they good for walking, hiking and water?
For ordinary walking, travel and simple summer use, I found the minimal design useful. They pack almost flat and there is very little shoe around the foot.
For rougher terrain, the question is whether you personally want 4 mm or 6 mm of rubber and a cord-based upper. I would not turn my own light-hiking use into a claim that the DIY kit is the best hiking sandal.
The current cord is described as water-resistant and the FeelTrue outsole is rubber, so wet use is practical. As with any sandal, grip depends on the exact surface and the sole's condition, and the under-foot knot is worth remembering on abrasive ground.
What about making pairs for children?
The old article suggested buying oversized material, trimming it for growth and getting multiple children's pairs out of one raw Classic kit. That advice belonged to a different product configuration.
The current Genesis DIY kit uses pre-shaped outsoles selected by foot length. For a child, use the current sizing process rather than deliberately making the sandal oversized “to grow into”. A secure fit matters more than extracting theoretical extra life from the rubber.
I would also avoid presenting a DIY huarache as a universal children's shoe. Whether a child gets on with the toe cord, heel retention and thin sole is individual.
Is the DIY kit still good value?
The kit remains unusually inexpensive compared with most ready-made minimalist sandals, but price is not the only cost. You are trading some money for your own setup time and accepting that a cutting or punching mistake is yours.
That trade makes sense if customising the shape is part of the appeal. If you simply want a sandal that arrives ready to wear, compare the DIY kit with Xero's ready-made Genesis rather than choosing DIY on headline price alone.
What I wish I knew before making them
- Do not rush the trimming. Lace and test first; trim second.
- Mark both feet separately. Toe-hole placement is part of the fit.
- Expect to adjust the cord. The simple lacing system still has a learning curve.
- 4 mm and 6 mm are different experiences. Pick based on ground feel versus protection, not because one is “more barefoot”.
- The current product is the Genesis DIY Sandal Kit. Old FeelTrue/Classic comparisons can make the present range unnecessarily confusing.
- DIY is the feature, not an inconvenience to hide. If you do not want the project, buy a ready-made sandal.
Would I buy the kit again?
Yes, if I specifically wanted the customisation. The ability to decide the outline and toe-hole position is genuinely different from ordering a normal sandal, and the finished result can be extremely minimal.
I would buy it with more realistic expectations than the old article gave: it is not an automatic perfect fit, it is not a health intervention and the current Genesis DIY kit is not the same product menu that existed when the original review was written.
